Under rough weather conditions, or even a knock down, it can become very dangerous inside a boat with gear flying all around. We needed to ensure that all our drawers and cabinet doors were secured to prevent accidental openings, and came up with a few ideas.

Figuring out how to secure the drawers under the pullman berth was not easy process, but when the idea hit it was just so simple. I drilled a 1/4” hole through the bulkhead (accessed from the cabinets on either side of the drawers) and into the drawers. A 1/4” pin is inserted when we begin to encounter rough weather, and when not in use they are store in the top drawers. The pins will prevent the drawers from lifting up and sliding out.

Behind the settees, we have small boards that pull out to access the storage behind the cushions. Again, in order to prevent accidental openings in rough seas or during a knockdown, we added a pair of hinges and a button latch. Access remains easy, but much more secured.
