Isla de Flores

Flores is the capitol of Guatemala’s northern most state, Peten. It is situated on a small island on Lago Peten and is connected to the mainland by a small causeway. It was the site of teh Itza Mayan city of Tayasal which was not taken by the Spanish until 1697. Cortez had passed through here in 1525. All traces of Tayasal were destroyed by the Spanish. Flores and the the surrounding areas are now a commercial center for tourism, hardwoods, sugarcane and rubber. The major attraction to tourists is the grandest of all Mayan ruins, Tikal. Tikal is located 45 minutes from Flores.
